The American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs issued its most comprehensive statement ever on the use of prophylactic antibiotics in patients with joint replacements. After a thorough review of the available evidence the ADA concluded, “In general, for patients with prosthetic joint implants, prophylactic antibiotics are not recommended prior to dental procedures to prevent prosthetic joint infection.” The full statement is published in the January 2015 Journal of the American Dental Association and is available here.
